Finally finished the
Fables-based filk song that's been bouncing around in my brain since OVFF, nearly, uh, five months ago. (Note: This isn't the song I mentioned in my recent post about entering into the FKO songwriting contest.
That song isn't even started yet; I had to clear
this one out of my brain first.)
Anyway, it's from the perspective of Bigby Wolf in Bill Willingham's Vertigo series
Fables, which, for the initiated, deals with various characters from mythic/folklore/fairytale/etc. realms who flee to this realm (the "mundy" world) as refugees when an invading empire annexes all their realms, and make a life in a secret community in New York City. Bigby Wolf is ... well, say the name aloud a few times, and you'll figure it out.
So here it be (posting to
filk as well). Can't give you chords because I as yet don't read or score music, I write by ear, heh. But any arrangement anyone wants to give it for their own use is likely at least as good as mine.
LET ME IN
-L. David Wheeler, March 2007
I’m big and I’m bad, so they say
I’ll blow your straw houses away
I’ll eat up your grandma, devour you whole
Ravage your body and cripple your soul
Suspicion and fear and disdain take their toll
You’ll keep me around if I keep to my role
And I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll howl and I’ll bay
And I’ll drown all the pain and the things that you say
And I’ll smoke and I’ll brood and I’ll try not to care
That I’m seen as the face of my crimes
Once upon a time
I can smell your desires on the wind
I can taste all your virtues and sins
I know when you’re angry, I know when you cry
I know when you’re truthful, I know why you lie
I know when a laugh threatens only to die
I’m no prince, I’ve no charm, but I see past your eyes
And I’ll toss and I’ll turn and I’ll seethe and I’ll writhe
And I’ll just do my job and I’ll keep us alive
And I’ll give to this town a false mask of disdain
And I’ll tell myself I have no righ
To a soul that’s snow white
(Shift key)
I’m the son of the wind that blows down from the north
Freezing your crops and chilling your bones
I took what I wanted and laid it to waste
Until I was offered a home ...
(Shift back)
I’m a wolf in man’s clothing, it’s true
You’ll never know what I might do
It’s best that it’s ended, all I can bestow
Is the love of a creature, all common and low
Four hundred years now, the ache only grows
It’s best that it’s brought to a close
And I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll walk and I’ll run
And I’ll dwell in the forest, a kingdom of one
And maybe they’ll find me, I can’t seem to care
Where I go at the end of the day ...
Let’s start with away.
Where do I go at the end of the day?
Let’s start with away ...
